The goal of WALK FOR THE UNDERDOG, a grass roots organization, is to raise money for dog rescue groups that are dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs locked in animal shelters.
The rescues provide basic necessities and medical care for the dogs they take in. This produces more adoptable dogs. Each newly adopted dog frees up space for another dog to be rescued from the shelter.
So, while our goal is to support rescue organizations, this directly helps dogs get out of pounds, dogs that wind up being euthanized unless we find them loving homes.
The publicity we raise through walkers' sponsorship helps increase awareness of the plight of shelter animals, highlighting the problems inherent in the animal welfare system (where 600 dogs are killed every month in the City of Los Angeles ).
Think of all the love you get and give to your dog, who was probably an "underdog" rescue at some point! This is a chance to give back. Everyone who has space in their heart can become part of the solution for orphaned dogs. It's just one step away.
In 2006, Walk for the Underdog supported 26 dog Rescues. In 2007, Walk for the Underdog proudly supported 30 dog Rescues. In 2008 we intend to raise even more money, benefit as many rescues, educate more people and save more dogs. Not bad for a day that is really a fun picnic in the park! Here are some of the organizations that have benefited from Walk for the Underdog.
